Either something regressed or FDO Toolbox will need some work to be able to load data into Oracle using the King.Oracle provider, which is strange as FDO is supposed to be an abstraction layer and FDO Toolbox is just simply working against the abstractions provided by the FDO API.Even docker on windows, which requires a Virtual Machine intermediate layer is still a seamless experience thanks to the Docker Toolbox suite of integrated tools. Docker made spinning up a repeatable and disposable Oracle XE environment dead simple. I didn't want to touch the Oracle installation process and I also didn't want to "taint" my host environment with an Oracle installation either. So what have I learned from this exercise? Kitematic, for downloading of docker images and spinning up of docker containers through an easy to use GUI.VirtualBox to interface with the barebones Linux VM hosting the docker engine.Fortunately, docker provides the Docker Toolbox package which makes setting up Docker on Windows or Mac an easy one click installer affair with everything to get docker up and running on Windows or Mac VirtualBox) for docker on windows to interface with. Unlike Linux, Docker support on Windows is not first-class (they're working on that ^) and currently requires a virtualization layer (eg. Since Windows is the first priority platform of focus for any MapGuide/FDO issues, I needed to get docker installed on Windows. We have docker, and there's bound to be an Oracle docker image on the docker hub, that I can pull down, spin up a container and have an Oracle installation ready to go. I shouldn't even have to do it inside a clean test Virtual Machine. Having had the displeasure of working with Oracle in the past and encountering its horrible, UI-from-the-last-millennium setup process and administrative UIs, I really didn't want to go down that path.Īnd in YEAR(GETDATE()), I should no longer have to install Oracle to a bare metal OS. Naturally, this requires I have an installation of Oracle (XE at a minimum) lying around, which I don't. So before I start the release cycle for the first beta release of MapGuide Open Source 3.1, I'd thought I'd try to investigate (and try to knock off) some long standing issues with Oracle with the King FDO provider. This is just a blogger's tale of getting an installation of Oracle XE up and running with Docker with the minimum of pain and unnecessary administration so he can easily have an Oracle XE instance available for testing with MapGuide/FDO and other geospatial software. Neither is this post the opinions of someone with expert knowledge of Oracle. Some things in this post may feel disjointed and some things are now obviously being referenced in the past tense.ĭISCLAIMER: This is not an authoritative Oracle installation guide. Occasional “+” buttons to call up additional text that varies from caption- to feature-quality, sometimes filling an empty spot on the page, and at other times overlapping and obscuring the photos these buttons make complete sense on pages that were already full, but none on pages that would otherwise have large empty swaths of space. Most of the early pages are half white and half movie stills, sometimes with slight panning for the stills, with later pages moving to full screen-filling images and awkwardly split two-screen photos that can only be viewed one at a time, or held in the middle with a transition. Here, the particles are purely line based without glowing effects, so when you touch the screen with one finger, the emanating lines look like sparks two fingers create magnetism that results in line-based bouncing particles, three and four create different types of swirls, and five freeze time with the ability to swipe to shift particles in any direction you choose.Ĭinema 001 is a movie magazine that blends studio-provided photography, scant text, and intermittent voiceovers and video clips into two-dimensional layouts that make interesting but not ideal use of the iPad’s display. It’s effectively the same concept as Midnight HD, only with different particle behaviors and colors that we enjoyed, but would rank a step under Midnight’s. iLounge Rating: A-.Ĭolordodge Labs’ Uzu ($1, version 1.0.1) is also an iPad-only application with a separately sold version for the iPhone. More than any other application we’ve seen, Midnight HD makes you feel as if you’ve just developed the power to control energy with your fingers the only things we’d love to see it gain are a settings menu with even more visual effect options, and a little audio. Ten fingers activates or deactivates the particles’ glow, and other finger combinations have other effects, with a just-released point update adding a psuedo time-reversing effect that we haven’t quite been able to master. Four fingers freeze the particles and let you swipe to rotate the entire collection in 3-D, a Matrix bullet time-like effect, and five fingers creates a huge magnetic swirl that-like the two-finger magnet-can be tossed from one side of the screen to the other. Two fingers in close proximity transform you into a magnet, attracting the particles in an almost magical swirl, creating a larger vortex as you expand your fingers outwards. If Midnight did nothing more than this, it would be pretty neat.īut it does a lot more. Placing one finger on the screen creates an orange explosion of radiating particles, mildly disrupting the field until you release your finger. Left untouched, the application shows tiny white glowing lines that appear to be swimming in a completely black field, casting light in rays outwards from the center of the screen. Hyperbolic Magnetism’s Midnight HD ($1, version 1.1) is an iPad-only release-a bummer for those who might want to use it without buying a separate app for iPhones and iPod touches-but it’s one of the most impressive particle demonstrations we’ve yet seen on Apple’s tablet. Better guidance for the settings, some audio, and more visual effects could make this really cool. No sonic accompaniment, few frills, and less than intuitive settings prevent the experience of using the application from being truly engrossing, but when you learn how the settings work, Gravilux begins to generate interestingly noisy patterns that feel like a fusion of plasma balls and shakable snow domes. On both screen sizes, Gravilux presents you with a grid of dots that deform wherever you touch the screen one mode turns your fingers into magnets, and the other into repulsers, attracting or repelling the dots, while settings let you change the colors, sizes, and behaviors of the dots. The fact that Gravilux ($1, version 1.3) by Scott Snibbe is both iPhone and iPad compatible is one of its strongest attractions it is the most demo-like of all of the applications covered in this roundup. I haven't been able to pin exactly what prompts the hang, other than using the eyedropper to sample from one of the two documents. It's not happened every time I use the eyedropper to select a color, but very, very frequently. So slightly different circumstances, but too close to think they're not connected. I was using one as a source for the other, and the source was a JPEG, the other a PSD. The other times, I have had the eyedropper selected, and two documents open, only one with multiple layers, both tabbed to the App frame, but arranged vertically. So I selected color with the eyedropper from one-it worked, then the other-it failed and hung PS. I can't replicate the problem with your steps-tried twice, but then I went the step further to see what would happen if I used the eyedropper tool-would that cause the PS hang I've experienced - twice earlier today, and a couple of times the day before. And mine is the eyedropper, not the Color Picker itself. It's not exactly the same-that is, with identical steps. Okay, this seems directly related to a bug I just found recently. Since File A and File B can be any two files I didn't think you'd need screenshots of that, but let me know if you do and I can screenshot play by play. I've attached a screenshot of the activity monitor, if this helps, to show what happens with the CPU when this happens. Regardless, if I follow these steps it puts Photoshop in an unresponsive state. I'm not sure if the fact of having zoomed in a couple of times on both files contributes to this or the fact that file #1 is in an unsaved state at the time, or maybe a combination of both? you see the little asterisk)ĥ) Zoom in a couple of times on the second file alsoĦ) Move the second file out so that it is un-docked and free floating to the side of the main Photoshop applicationħ) Take the color picker and sample a color from this second file And you have to do these steps exactly:ġ) Have a photoshop file with at least 2 layers open and docked to the main app's layout.Ģ) Zoom in a couple of times on the file from #1ģ) Also in this same file from #1, change something and leave it in the "unsaved" state (i.e. I experimented and size or number of layers does not factor into it. Doing the following, however, does indeed make it happen every time: Just using the color picker did not do the trick. Is there a separate bug fix I need to download/install?īut I did figure out the steps to replicate this. When colour is selected that colour is passed to eg: TB colour picker or other program as required, but in the case of Thunderbird, it seems TB cannot use it until specific event takes place eg: Closure of MAC / Windows colour picker.I guess I have the fix? I do not see any new updates in the Creative Cloud updates list. It seems that it is normal for MAC users to leave that 'MAC colour picker' window open, a person in Support Forum mentioned that it is possible to run a little app that makes the colour picker even more persistent - it's basically on screen all the time which explains why there is no OK button - it is expected that it is not required. This would force the user to close that MAC colour picker window and solve the issue. This does not occur in Windows OS, hence why no problem.Īs the 'MAC colour picker' has no 'OK' - (so needing to click on the top left 'close' icon), is there any way focus can be kept on the 'MAC colour picker' window whilst it is open, so impossible to select anything in the 'TB colour picker' window. It is also possible to regain focus on the 'TB colour picker' and select that OK, whilst the 'MAC colour picker' window is still open. It would seem that that the 'MAC colour picker' window does not have an 'OK' button, so easy to leave it open. You cannot even select the OK on the TB colour picker until the 'windows colour picker' window has been closed, so naturally forcing the user to click on 'OK' to select and close. In Windows OS, the 'Windows colour picker' requires you to choose a colour and then click on 'OK' in order to confirm colour and close the 'windows colour picker' window and then you click on OK in the TB colour picker to confirm selection. Even 2 years in, every now and again I pull a shot that makes me go "shit that's good" So… If you run hot water through the group head before every shot, you'll be prompted to clean every 100 coffees The "clean me" indicator comes on after every 200 shots. The grinder is matched perfectly to the machine, but it will not grind coarse enough for drip/filter if you're looking for a dual purpose grinder 54mm basket is not a standard size so no real availability of aftermarket accessories The drip tray is remarkably small (requires emptying every ~6 shots) and the metal clad drip tray front prone to denting No simultaneous shot/steam means back to back coffees are doable but a pain And we're still only talking 30-40 seconds to get to 65C. Thermoblock means the steam wand is much slower than a boiler… this might sound like a con but it means you have much more time to focus on the consistency. Built in grinder means it is noticably smaller on a bench than the 920 I find it much less temperamental and fussy than the 920… family and friends regularly give it a whirl and haven't done any damage yet Notably cheaper than the 920 when on sale If the main purpose of your coffee machine is to make your own coffee in the morning, or just one coffee at a time, as opposed to 3 or 4 back to back when guests come over, the 870 is easily worth it for the money. Some would say the built in grinder on the 870 is a drawback because if it breaks, the whole machine is in for repair - but I've never heard of a grinder failing on one. An exact comparison is difficult though because with the stock baskets, the 920 will hold more dry coffee than the 870 (around ~22g vs 18g in the basket) - the 920 uses a standard 58mm basket whereas the 870 uses a slightly smaller 54mm (I believe) - but it means the brew ratios end up ever so slightly different. Using the same beans, and similar settings, they are very, very similar. With the 870 I personally run some hot water through the portafilter before I attach the group handle - gets everything nicely preheated to keep the temp as stable throughout the shot as possible (ideal). Now I'm sure plenty will scream blasphemy - but in the actual shot quality there is very little in it. Apologies in advance when I begin ranting: Hi, I own both and have done for around 18 months (BES870, BES920) both used with a smart grinder pro (the BCG820, not the 800) - and also use both on a regular basis. I bought this machine when they had it at that price with the $100 cash back from Breville. P.S.S Never buy beans from a supermarket and never touch pre ground or beans that say best by. I have heard that some of those smart grinders have been slightly dodgy or just need adjusting though I have no experience with those, I am still stuck on a modded 480 Sunbeam. Other factors are temperature and humidity. Shot should only last up to 26 seconds with the 8 second infuse. If not then the puck is drying out too quick and there is something wrong with either the grind or the bean. The other important thing, if ground correctly, your needle needs to be above 9 through the whole shot, starting just under 10 and finishing above 9. Throw away the single cup basket, every shot should be a double shot, else sell your machine and drink tea. Why do people keep using the words Nespresso and coffee in the same sentence?Īdvice, make sure the bean has been roasted within the last two weeks. So I'm not saying anything bad about the machine, and maybe there are coffee snobs who can tell the difference, or even pull better shots than me (surely!) but I also think Nespresso is pretty up there for this purpose and so I felt a little disappointed because I was expecting a bigger leap on quality. To my tastebuds a Nespresso diluted in milk is extremely similar to the output of this machine, though, my partner says she prefers this machine and that my coffee is as good as the stuff from the roaster/cafe where we buy some of our beans. I also use the 12/3 technique with the milk and get really good microfoam.īut I don't like the taste of espresso, I only drink cappuccino, and there is not much to differentiate a "pretty good" cappuccino from an "excellent" cappuccino. I can evaluate whether the grind is right from the tamper and the provided edging tool, the impression on the puck after a draw, and mostly how the coffee comes out as a thin dribble rather than thick and watery, and then the result of how the coffee looks in the cup with the crema and sometimes tiger striping. I watched a lot of videos and I'm using the right technique on a variety of freshly roasted beans. If you learn your way around the environment and enemies and figure out the path ahead, you'll make good progress and locate a path forward to find new shells and new weapons (which also come in fours). What initially looks like a labyrinth with a myriad of similar-looking paths slowly becomes a familiar quantity if you take your time to explore. The adventure starts in the hub world, Fallgrim, which is an overgrown forest that's intersected by swamps and enemy campfires. The structure of the game is slightly confusing. Like other Soulslike titles, the journey is fun and engaging enough to make the story irrelevant if you want it to be. There is a story, and if you're familiar with Dark Souls, you'll have an idea of the lengths you'll have to go to uncover the lore. You get the first pretty quickly, but you'll have to search out the rest before you can use them. There are four shells in the game, each with different stats that determine your health, resolve and stamina. Fret not, since our pale protagonist can inhabit "shells," or fallen human warriors. A single hit means instant demise, but it can harden its skin to repel incoming damage for a short time. We start the game as a creature referred to as "foundling," which isn't fit for battle. On the other hand, the trimming of RPG mechanics, short runtime, and gameplay novelties twist the game into a direction that is unmistakably its own. Mortal Shell seems to invite the Souls game comparisons with its gloomy color palette, slow and methodical combat, confusing maze-like world, and cryptic item descriptions. |
